Sex and Drugs and a Little Bit of Yoga

In mass communications yesterday we talked about a lot! First we talked about media monopolies. I really enjoyed the discussion we had about because of all the facts I never knew, and that I probably never would have known. The most interesting and shocking one is the fact that 7 per cent of the population owns ninety-seven per cent of the world's wealth. I don't think the world's monopolies will ever change. If they do, that 7 per cent will only decrease. In the future, I couldn't say how long, one company will own and traffic all of the media. Mark showed us a website where you can see who is on the board of directors of nearly every company. The site is http://www.theyrule.com/ and without this class I never would have known that site existed either. It is actually a very interesting site. I found myself going on it and looking at all the companies' board of directors when I got back to residence.
The next two things we talked about were drugs and sex. Mark talked about how a lot of people want marijuana to be legalized and how terrible it is for you. He told us that one joint is equal to fifteen low-tar cigarettes. I don't know a lot about cigarettes or marijuana but that definitely doesn't sound healthy.
I am proud to say that I am one of the few people my age that hasn't tried any type of drug, this includes marijuana. I must admit though, I probably will try at least once before the end of this school year just to see what it's like; to experiment a little bit.
Mark mentioned an anti-marijuana activist. Her name is Nancy Reagan. She was the lady who made the phrase "Just say no" famous. That phrase has had a bigger impact on me than you can imagine. It isn't the reason why I have never done drugs; it has had a different impact. When I was in public school we used to go on a "Just Say No Walk" through one of the bigger parks in Sarnia, where I lived. All of the grades from 4 to 6 took part in the event. The goal of it was to raise awareness about not smoking and not doing drugs. One year during the walk though, I can remember two of my friends going into the bushes and have a cigarette. These two were really "cool".
The topic of discussion then somehow switched from drugs to sex. Mark gave us the old "the only safe sex is no sex." He then told about all the ways to keep yourself safe if you do decide to have sex. He wasn't trying to convince us not to have sex, I knew that right away. He was just trying to keep his seeds safe so they can one day grow into beautiful flowers!
