Today in mass communications we discussed a lot. There were two topics that I could really relate to. The first one was when Mark talked about us being responsible for our own learning. This is so true. Teachers can only do so much. Even if they give lectures and assignment, we as students are responsible to take down notes and get the assignments done. If we don't do either of these it is a waste of our money. Some people at this university don't even seem to realize how privileged they are to be here. A few of my friends have written five blogs or less so far and haven't done all the readings. Today we handed in the semiotic analysis assignment and my friend informed me that someone asked Mark's assistant Ian for a one week extension. That's absolutely ridiculous. We have known about the assignment for the literally the entire semester and there is no reason why one wouldn't be able to have it done. I realize that I am responsible for my own education and if I don't do it, no one is going to do it for me!
All through my school year my teachers have told me what they want from me in terms of assignments. I've actually liked it though. I know what the teacher expects so that I can get the best mark possible. With the semiotic paper I didn't really know what Mark was expecting because the outline for the essay was really vague. There was no minimum number of words either so it was hard to compare to other people because I heard people who wrote two pages and one girl even wrote twenty. It wasn't terrible though because it gave me freedom to write it however I wanted to but I'd rather have more of an idea of what my professor is expecting.
