For the documentary group project my group watched the movie March of the Penguins. My group consisted of Kylie Meyermann, Tricia Crabb, Kevin Meikle and Katie Perkins. The movie is a documentation of the birth cycle of the penguin. It describes everything the penguins have to go through and all the obstacles they have to overcome in order to successfully give birth.
At first, this wouldn't seem to have anything to do with the media. My group was able to look closer and have an in depth discussion about how it is related to the media. First of all, we rarely ever get to look at other cultures and how they live. Let alone a different species' culture. It really opened my eyes to how lucky we are to live the way we do. Penguins struggle to live every single day while my biggest problem is finding time to write these blogs. The media doesn't often expose us to different cultures and rarely lets us see how people are living outside our own at all. The media is becoming a filter. It is filtering out topics like this one, but letting celebrities and entertainment pass through it like water. It was a nice change to watch something other than E! True Hollywood Story or Born to Be (the hit show on Much Music).
This documentary should be viewed by my class mates because it shows a different side of the media than all that celebrity bull s&*!. Media never shows us animals unless they're being rescued or attacking someone. There is never a "day in the life of" an animal. That is what makes this movie so interesting. It deviates from the norm and gives people like me (who hate celebrity gossip) something to believe in!
