Fashion in the Media

For the first group project, the image curation, I worked with Ashley Cabral, Laura Piedade, Olena Protsiv, Simon Gotlieb and Christina Bloise. We based our project around the growing importance of fashion in Canadian society. Society is starting to stress the importance of fashion and it is shown all around us. It is in an unhealthy way though. In well known magazines such as Cosmopolitan and Vogue nearly all the female celebrities and even the regular females have brand name clothing on like Hollister, Guess and Tommy Hilfiger. This implies to women readers that if they don't wear these brands they won't be considered as good and may lead them to thinking that society won't accept them. This doesn't just apply to women either. Some, but only few, magazines stress top brand names in fashion onto men as well. Magazines like GQ tell men what fashions are popular. In our image curation, we wanted to show how celebrities are always wearing the latest fashions and how regular people like us tend to follow suit. We also wanted to make it clear that this isn't a new trend happening. It has been going on since the early 1900's, people see someone they admire wearing the latest fashion, and they just have to have it.
One of the most influential bands on the fashion industry was the Beatles. They changed not only the face of music, but the way many people dressed and looked. They are one of the most popular bands of all time and are known by everyone, young and old. When people saw what they wore and how they wore it, they had to have it. Even their haircuts were rubbing off on the general public, and not just the men either. We showed this in our image curation using several pictures of the Beatles and a picture that said "Beatle Hairdos & Setting Patterns". This advertisement proves the effect the Beatles had on the general public.
This project was actually a lot of fun. Like I said in my other post, I enjoy making these movies. When my groups suggested we use Windows Movie Maker I was all for it. It was great working with the people that I did too because they all contributed equally. I didn't find myself having to hunt them down for their part of the project like I have had to do so many times with groups in the past. I didn't join the group until they already had a basic idea of they were going to do so it was awesome they let me in so late. I enjoyed making this project and I would work with this group again anytime!
