Today was the day of presentations. Everybody looked a little nervous when we all got there because no one knew what to expect. Everyone had made something different and I was kind of looking forward to seeing how creative everyone was. It was a lot more fun than just sitting in my seat listening to Mark talk for two and a half hours. My presentation went pretty well, everybody seemed to enjoy my movie. There were a lot of creative ideas that were really good. My favourite had to be the banana that was stuck to a bristol board using velcro. The idea behind it was that you eat the banana when it is yellow, you don't when it is green, and when it is brown you know it will be mushy. He used this as a metaphor for the media; it basically controls what we do with it. I felt this was the most creative and well thought out ideas that was shown, I know I would never have been able to think of it. The other one I really liked was the stereotype movie. He used sock puppets to create an image of what people assume some people are like without even meeting them. Some examples are:
-jocks are dumb and are only into sports
-cheerleaders always date jocks and party and drink
-homosexuals have AIDS
The point of the movie was to show that you can't judge someone because of what you think they are. Like the old saying, you can't judge a book by the cover.
This assignment reminded me of high school, everyone going up and talking about their project. There were collages, short videos, decorated objects, and even a banana. I didn't expect university to be fun like this. I thought it was just going to be a lecture everyday and we wouldn't really be able to express ourselves in this kind of creative manner. I didn't think the professors would let us express ourselves through creative porjects, I though we would have to do it entirely through our writing. I love expressing myself through creative projects like this though because not only are they a lot more fun but I am more of a visual person. I'm not saying I don't like to write, because I do, it is just nice to do something like this for a change.
